Heat waves continue to wreak havoc across various regions of the state, prompting the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to once again declare holidays for schools and colleges starting from May 2.
With May Day falling on the Monday before May 2, a school holiday, and the preceding day being a Sunday, summer vacations will now begin in schools from Saturday onwards. The education department is set to provide further information regarding the reopening of schools after this extended summer break.
Originally, summer vacation was scheduled to commence on May 24 for government schools. However, the onset of severe heat in the first week of April has compelled authorities to bring forward the vacation period. This decision comes in the wake of soaring temperatures and heat waves causing significant disruptions in the state, impacting the daily lives of people and affecting productivity.
As a result, the Chief Minister has taken this measure to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students, staff, and faculty members in educational institutions. The move will also provide some respite to the general public from the intense heat and enable them to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
